Best. Movie. Ever.

Know what movie I'm talking about? I'll give you a hint...sexy vampires, ripped werewolves...if you have been living under a rock its Eclipse! And yes- I'm one of those girls- the ones obsessed with this love story. And NO thats not where I got the name Jasper- I had never even heard of Twilight until Jasper was a year old.

A few friends and I went out for drinks before going to the midnight showing. We got into the theater at 9:50 and still werent even able to get seats for all 5 of us in the 2nd section of the theater- but at least we were in the last row of the first section. I wont spoil it for those of you who are planning on seeing it. One word to some it up? A M A Z I N G. It was almost everything I hoped it would be. And that's saying a LOT.

Of course today I'm rediculously tired since I didn't get home till 3:30 and had to be up at 6 to take Drew to the airport. Me and 2.5 hrs of sleep do NOT get along. BUt it was still sooo worth it.

Jasper's Birth Story Part Two

So after jumping up to 9 the nurse MISTAKENLY told you " You are going to see your baby boy within an hour" By then the epidural had worn off and actually came out I guess? Mass confusion at this point so I don't get exactly what happened but I remember asking for another and they said there was no time- it was time to push and he would be here in a few minutes.
I thought okay I dont need it if I'm going to see my baby boy soon. Soon did not come soon enough.

The next few hours are a bit of a blur. I started pushing at about 10-10:15 AM. The doctor showed up by 11:30.The doctor than said he could see the hair and if I wanted to know what color- I said as long as it wasn't red I would keep going (Drew's kind of a red head) they said it was very dark. I kept going. By 1 they were calling up for blood because I was loosing so much. Then they got concerned for baby and started talking about possible C-Section. I was border line blacking out at this point- I guess from the combination of pain and extreme lack of blood and not freaking eating for over 24 hrs! And lets face it my 'last meal' I was too nervous to eat so really it had been like 36 hrs since I'd had any food. They decided to try the forceps and said if he wasnt out in 10 they were going to have to do a c-section. If I had been able to talk I know my words would have been " DO THE DAMN C-SECTION" Especially if I would have known what was to come. The forceps. I thought I had experienced pain for the past 14 hrs but that was all NOTHING compared to the forceps. Imagine EXTREMELY LARGE salad tons. Inside you. Thats when I really blacked out. I don't remember hearing a baby cry- but then they laid my baby boy on top of my chest. My first thought was Wow he's huge. I just gave birth to a 13 lb baby- no wonder he wouldn't come out. When they took him away to way him and yelled out 8 lbs 10 ounces I thought no freakin way- that kid weighs way more than that. I guess because I was so weak from everything but it seriously felt like they dropped a dozen bricks on my chest. They quickly took him away and I had told Drew to go with the baby after birth and that I would be fine. Nobody tells you about afterwords and that your job is STILL not done.

After Drew and Jasper left I was alone in there for almost an hour being stitched up (too many stitches to count apparently) and also having the doctor root around inside of me for my placenta. Sound pleasant? Apparently it ripped apart (where a lot of the bleeding came from) so I had a hand inside of me after giving birth to a near 9 lb baby. It gets even better. They had to give me a shot in my leg to stop the hemorrhaging with the possible, but uncommon, side effects of vomiting and diarrhea. I was fortunate enough to be apart of that small percentage so minutes after being stitched up I got to simulatenously throw up into a bag while having a bowl placed underneath me. Looovveellyy. No baby book or class ever told me that. Finally when nothing was left inside of me to come out anywhere I was told if I didn't go pee I'd have to have a catheter. I lied. I was then transferred to the mom and baby floor where I could finally after about 2 hours see my big, beautiful, baby boy.

And there it is- Jasper's birth story. I was reccomended I have a c-section next time around, and I fully intend to go that route if thats what it takes next time. My birth story seems to scare people from wanting to have kids- but even after all of that (and the months of pain afterwards) I would do it again in a heart beat. Jasper is my world.

Jasper's Birth Story (almost 3 years later..) Warning: Might not want to read if expecting a child..Part one.

I so wish I had been blogging when I was pregnant and had a newborn- but I did write in a journal from time to time! Reading everyone's birth stories always makes me wish I had written mine..so here it is.

Jasper was apparently quite comfortable in my belly because he was showing NO signs of coming out. At my last doctors appointment 6 days after his due date I was not dilated even after 'having my membrane stripped' the previous week. So they did it again. ANd MAAAN did that hurt- I seriously think that hurt even worse than labor( which was no picnic) I was in tears- but I thought for sure now something would happen. NOPE. So the next evening (August 2nd) they scheduled me to come in and be induced. 4 days after my 21st birthday.

We arrived at the hospital at about 6 PM and they set me up in my room. The nurse again tried to strip my membranes. After googling this it said not to do it if you aren't dilated because IT WILL CAUSE INTENSE PAIN- and still nothing. So she inserted something up in me- dont ask me what because I honestly have no clue. That was supposed to start inducing labor. She said the doctor had ordered for me to take two sleeping pills guaranteed to knock me out so I could wake up and have a baby..Sound a little to good to be true? Oh it was. So I took the pills and decided to read the last 50 pgs or so of the final Harry Potter book that had just come out the week before. So I read the book and fell asleep. I need to mention here that I was starving at this point because for some reason they had said not to eat after noon. I thought they would feed me there but I wasnt allowed anything but ice chips for the next 30 hrs.

After sleeping for about 20 minutues I woke up suddenly. I should mention here that I don't do well with medicine-I mean a teaspoon of nyquil will knock me out for 12 hrs at least- my mom had warned Drew about this and asked me to try to keep medicine away from me, but it didnt really happen. So I woke up and started yelling( I say talk sternly, drew says yell) at Drew to get Dumbledore, Snape and Harry Potter out of my room. Obviously he was confused- and tried reasoning with me and telling me they werent there. Which made me furious. Here I am about to deliver his child and he can't even make sure to keep creepy Snape out of the delivery room. Obviously they weren't in there and I was hallucinating. I can still picture it so clearly- they were standing at the edge of my bed, Dumbledore stroking his beard, Harry looking nervous and Snape staring at me with his beady eyes. After trying to convince me they weren't there Drew went off to find the nurse. As they walk in the door I reach for the garbage can next to my bed and begin to vomit. Sweet huh? I spend the first 3 months throwing everything up, I guess it was only fitting to spend the last few hours of being pregnant the same way. At least I wasn't seeing Snape anymore.

I spent the next two hours throwing up everything, and eating ice chips. Sounds annoyed me. Silence annoyed me. TV- Music was definitely Not happening. Drew annoyed me the most. Poor guy. Except you don't get to feel sorry for him. After that I was able to fall asleep for maybe 20 min. and then woke up with incredible back pain. The only way I can describe it is that it felt like someone was taking a sledgehammer to my tail bone over and over. Probably doesn't help that I broke my tail bone about 4 yrs previously and it never healed right and sitting still for more than an hour is painful.. This went on for hours. Miserable. Around 1 am I was talking to a nurse wondering when labor was going to start and she said " Hunny you have been in labor for hours- what did you think that back pain was?" It seriously never even occurred to me that I was in labor. I'm going to blame that on the drugs that were still in my system from the sleeping pills. Plus you don't hear about back labor that often- but from what I have heard from others that have had both back labor and regular labor(for lack of better term) back labor is a lot worse- yay me.

At 6 AM the anaesthesiologist. The doctor on call had just gotten in the room as well. He said he was there to give me my epidural- I replied that I hadn't asked for one yet and the doctor looked at me and said " I called him. I think you are going to want that now" He got no argument from here- I had been in excrutiating pain for 8 hours- was going on 40 min. of sleep in 48 hrs (ofcourse couldnt sleep the night before being admitted since I KNEW I was going to be admitted) and was ready. He left to go get the stuff I assume- and the doctor pulled out a hook thingy and said it was time to break my water. Literally right as soon as I saw the needle I felt waster running down my legs. " Uhm..either I just peed my pants or my water broke" The doctor said he had never seen anyones water break right in front of him as he he was about to do it. I'm guessing Jasper didn't like the idea of that huge needle going up there any more than I did. Unfortunately he did that anyway since it didnt all gush out- just trickle. Which is why I seriously had just peed my pants in front of the cute doctor.

After the epidural came like 3 hours of bliss. I was able to call my mom and tell her they could come to the hospital if they wanted- and when they got there 45 min. later we just all hung out in my room for a while talking. It was Drew, my mom, my moms boyfriend of 7 yrs, my younger sis and younger brother. Then Drews mom, dad and younger brother showed up. Thats about when the epidural started wearing off and the Real pain began. They had started me on pitocin to speed things along since I was still only like 3 cm dilated. I went from 3 to 9 in about an hr- which from what I hear is not exactly normal. After that I kicked everyone (except for Drew) out and didn't see them till after Jasper was born.

One of those Amazing weekends

We seriously had one of those Perfect weekends. Perfect weather. Amazing food. Well behaved toddler. Fun activities. MAMMA ALONE TIME! I don't think it gets any better than that.

Saturday the day started off with iced coffee--i think every day that starts off with a white chocolate mocha on ice is bound to amazing. After Starbucks we head up to Estes Park (about a 45 min drive from us) for the yearly Swedish Midsummer Festival. Last year we were in Sweden for Midsummer, but the year before we went and always have SO much fun! There is amazing food, swedish songs and dancing around the midsummer pole, swedish crafts/booths and people speaking swedish everywhere! For me it doesn't get much better than that since I don't get to hear Swedish being spoken that often. Brings me back to my childhood! Jasper found a little Pippi doll(hes obsessed!) and so ofcourse we had to get that for him- and I found a cute blue Valkommen(welcome) sign to add to our ever growing Swedish collection.

While dancing with a little girl who was speaking Swedish I got to talking with the mom and realized they go to our Swedish school ( I thought the mom looked familiar but last time I saw her she was very pregnant and has since had another baby girl) and Riley(the girl) will be in Jaspers swedish class in the fall! They are only 3 days apart in age so that was fun!

After grabbing lunch and heading down the mountain it was time for J to take a nap and ME to go to my make up consulting appointment. My friend had convinced me to go with her so I was really just there for support- but ended up getting a makeover at the Laura Mercier counter. I ended up buying the tinted moisturizer and some blush so I will do a review on those once I have messed around with it a bit.

Drew and Jasper than met me at the mall for Jaspers FIRST HAIRCUT EVER! We only took a couple of inches off the back so now its less mulletish- and still long and curly which I L O V E.

Theeen Mamma had a night out! Since our make up was all done we decided to go out in Denver with another friend and we did a trivia night at a bar- which we sucked at but had a ton of fun. I mean seriously, Star Trek vs. Star Wars was one of the categories..I'm not too bummed we failed that round Miserably.

Sunday morning I woke up slightly hungover but to perfect weather again. I grabbed an ice coffee to go from Starbucks again and headed to Denver for my brazilian bikini wax. I brought a friend along for her first time ever and she LOVED it- as I knew she would.

After that Drew and Jasper met me in Denver and we went and played in the river- which jasper Loved. Then we went to see where Daddy works since he just started a new job. We also looked at some new places where we might live. After 3 years (minus 6 months in Sweden) we might be leaving the suburbs for city life. I didnt know how I felt about it at first- but after being down there I think it might be an awesome idea.

Sunday night we grilled out- then Drew worked on a project for work while I watched Remember Me- with my love Robert Pattison. Swooon.

Faaaabulous weekend!

Top Two Tuesday!

Top Two Items I'd bring to a deserted island...

1. An endless supply of books- or a kindle once I get one(hopefully soon!) My favorite way to spend a lazy morning/afternoon of whenever I happen to get some free time is with a good book and an iced coffee. I love ALL books- classics, romantic novels, sad tragedies, murder mysteries, anything about VAMPIRES, as long as its not a text book I seriously love it. And YES I realized this makes me a bit of a nerd.

2. And this brings me to my number two: WHITE CHOCOLATE MOCHA ON ICE. Agh heaven. I could drink those all day.

If I had an endless supply of my iced coffee and good books I probably wouldnt want to leave!

Anyone tried Pixi?

Even though I rarely wear makeup other than mascara I somehow have a minor obsession with it. Pointless? Maybe. Stoppable? Nope.

Lately I have been eyeing the Pixi line at target. The only Pixi store is in London but they have a section at target so I decided to try out the Gel Liner in onyx. It comes with a sweet little brush too! I'm excited to try it out. Anyone else tried any of their other products?

Operation Start taking better care of ME

For the last three years I feel like EVERYTHING I have done has been for Jasper and Drew. I was running myself ragged thinking only of them and if they had everything they needed. By the end of the day there was zero time left over for myself. And I get that is what being a mom is all about- and this is Not me complaining, just stating how it was. Lately I have realized if I don't start taking better care of myself and doing something for MYSELF once in a while I will keep spreading myself so thin that I'm bound to start breaking. Plus, and most importantly, I'm a better mom when I get an hour to myself once in a while- and now that Drew won't be working weekends anymore (except on a very rare occasion) I can actually schedule things to do! SO excited about this.

Some of the things I want to get in regularly for myself on weekends is
Mani/Pedi every few months
Brazilian bikini wax every 4-5 weeks
Pilates weekend class every few weeks
And probably my favorite- grab a coffee, a good book and somewhere quiet to read ALL. BY.MYSELF
And I refuse to feel guilty about any of it!

What do I have planned for this weekend you ask? Saturday I have an appointment with the Laura Mercier counter at Nordstrom's for a makeover/consulting (mainly because a friend talked me into it and thought it would be fun) followed by a few drinks with the girls and Sunday my bikini wax is scheduled. Super stoked.

Simple, yummy pasta dish

My name is Darlene and I. Love. Pasta.

It sounds like I'm confessing to something when I admit this but basically I am. My love for pasta goes far and beyond the occasional pasta dish. I'll blame it on my moms Italian side of the family. Anyway I'm always trying new pasta dishes. And one of my favorite ones to make is Suuuuper simple.

Here are the ingredients.
Pasta.
Boiling water.
Butter.
Parmesan Cheese
Zuccini
Cherry tomatoes.

THATS IT!
Boil the pasta in water
Boil the zuccini
When pasta is done add butter and parmesan cheese
Add the veggies and DONE

Beauty tips from around the world: Sweden

I'm always reading articles about beauty tips from around the world but never try them. Now I have decided to try them. Why not? Having spent a lot of time in Sweden I can tell you they have the most beautiful men AND women. Seriously- they all look like they just stepped out of a catalog. I have found a few things they supposedly do. Some of these I know for a fact that many of them do- other parts of it could be myth.

1. Drink a ton of water every day.
2. Splash their face in ice cold water in the morning and night.
3. Hit the steam room or sauna on a regular basis.

All of these things sound simple enough so for the next two weeks I'm going to try to drink 100 ounces of water a day, splash my face in ice cold water in the morning and at night, and go to the steam room or sauna at least twice a week. Luckily I have a steam room and sauna about a 3 minute walk from our place- and they are open till 10 every night so I have no excuse not to go! Hopefully I will have something good to report back!

**And yes, I do realize I wont turn into a blonde Swedish beauty like Malin Akerman or Elin Nordegren just by doing this, after all I am half Italian :)**

1. Brazilian Bikini Wax. Sort of a waste of money I guess at $45/50 a time every 4-5 weeks, but I Loooove em. Gweneth Paltrow was right when she said they were life changing.

2. Dresses. Its the one thing I can't seem to help buying for myself. Im always on the hunt for new ones!

Baby fever...and the 'crazy' thing I intend to do next time around

Now that Jasper is going to be THREE this summer (still can't believe it) I at times start to have baby fever. I have always knows I want kids- but the number changes. 3?4?5? But right now the timing Definitely isn't right. We are getting married in October- so maybe sometime next year? Who knows, but when thinking about babies I think about things I will do differently and the same next time around. Probably the biggest thing I want to do differently will shock everyone(at least Americans.) And at first it sounded crazy to me too- but after doing a TON of research on it I have come to the conclusion its Genius.

Before revealing the shocker I'm going to give a little background. I was born in florida but moved to Sweden when I was just a toddler. My dad is Swedish and mom American. We moved to the US when I was in 4th grade and I hadnt been back till last year when Drew, Jasper and I studied abroad there for 6 months. While there I picked up on some of their traditions..which is where this one comes from.

Ready? K. Next time around I want my baby to....NAP OUTSIDE! All babies in Sweden have these sweet prams (yep- we got one too) that protect the babies from all elements. In the winter they sleep on these wool rug thingys and are dressed head to toe in snow hear, and in the summer they sleep in the shade in weather appropriate clothing. Its brilliant!

At first when I heard Jaspers daycare in Sweden did that I freaked out. (Even though he was only going to be there 3 hrs a day twice a week)

Won't they freeze??-It was january and between 25-35 degrees during the day on average. Nope- they are sheltered on all sides- wearing several layers including hats, gloves, scarves and snowsuits.

Won't they get sick?? The daycare had between 15-20 kids and 5-6 adults and in the 6 months I never even saw them have runny noses or colds- which is not something I can say for most daycare children in America during the winter. Here kids are always sick with something!

What if someone tries to steal a baby sleeping outside? This was more a question for everyone else who just leaves their baby sleeping outside in the pram in their gardens and not the daycare where the children were always supervised. I'm not kidding- even in a big city like stockholm you will see prams lined up outside of cafes with sleeping children while moms are inside having 'fika'- coffee/coffee cake. Answer I got- Who would steal a baby?? And they looked at me like I was the crazy one. I love that- I loved being in a country where its safe enough to leave your babies sleeping outside and I look like the crazy one for thinking someone was going to steal a baby (because it NEVER happens there)

That was it- those were the only concerns I could come up with for why babies shouldn't sleep outside.

And here are the reasons why it's beneficial.
*There is not much better for babies/children/EVERYONE than fresh air. You can not possibly get too much fresh air.
*Many believe babies sleep better outside and sleep longer. This was always the case for my son when we were on walks- running errands outside etc.
*They also believe the fresh air makes them healthier, stronger, and maybe we should listen to the Swedes since they all do this and they have the highest life expectancy in the world. I think they might know a thing or two about living longer, healthier lives.
*People get colds in the winter because they are cooped up more inside without the fresh air--this totally made sense to me when I thought about it.

I know I sleep better when the windows are open and its a little chillier in the room. We like to crack our windows in the winter also and spend hours outside every day. Maybe thats why I can count on one hand how many times my soon to be three year old has been sick.

I don't expect most people to agree with me on this- but its something I cant wait to do next time around :)

Our weekend

This was the first weekend in...like months probably that we had the whole weekend off. By we I ofcourse mean Drew- since I have every weekend off. It was nice to have a relaxing weekend before Drew starts his job on Monday. It's a great job but is going to mean a lot of hours.

Saturday morning Drew needed to get a suit altered so we went to a mall about 40 min. away instead of the one right next door. I had only been to this mall once and that was years ago. So while Drew was doing his suit stuff Jasper and I walked through some of the outlet stores while sipping on a white hot mocha- me and pomegranate plum juice-for J. Then we met up with Drew and walked around the mall- which is HUUUGE. I ended up getting three dresses- one from American Eagle which used to be my fav but not so much the last couple of years. The other two dresses are from Papaya- a store I had heard of but never been to one. I have to say i Loooove it. It was hard to only buy those two dresses!

Today we met my sis in law and niece Annika for brunch at the Buff in Boulder- which is amazing. She was in town from Iowa for the weekend so it was really great to see them. Tody we have just been getting stuff done around the apartment and today we will be folding about 9 loads of laundry, watching a movie and eating pizzzzaaa. Hope everyone's weekend was fabulous!

Pool + Sun= Super long Nap

Ever since our pools opened up we have been going pretty much every morning that the sun it out- which in Sunny Colorado seems to be about 5 mornings a week. And NO complaints here! We usually go right when they open at 10 and stay till about 12- but today we had some friends meet us there and we ordered pizza and had it delivered to the pool. So since we didnt have to get back for lunch we stayed till 12:45 and Riley (the boy 10 month old boy I nanny for) slept from 12:45 till wait for it......4:30!!! Just call me the baby whisperer (his parents do!) And Jasper slept from 1- 3:45!! Almost a 3 hr nap for a soon to be 3 year old. 3 hours to myself and I barely knew what to do with myself! Soo ofcourse I sat back with an ice cold pepsi and my latest book- Stieg Larssons final book in his trilogy- Girl who kicked the hornets nest. Suuuper good.

Wish List Wednesday

Wish List Wednesday...

1. A HOUSE! Here (Colorado) or in Iowa- wherever we decide to stay after our lease is up in March. Doesnt have to be anything huge or fancy- in fact I prefer more simple houses- but I do want an open floorplan and at least 3 bedrooms, preferably 4. And a fenced in back yard- the fence has to be 6 feet.

2. Finish one of my four college degrees I have started- Political Science, Business, Communcation and most recently- Early Childhood Education.

3. A summer house in Sweden- this is why I dont need my house in the states to be super big or fance, because Im going to have TWO houses :)

4. Unlimited airplane rides back and forth to Sweden to see all of my amazing friends and family over there whenever I want.

Weekly recipe: Swedish pancakes

I have vowed to try at LEAST one new recipe a week- hopefully more.

This weekend the future in-laws were all here for Drews graduation from Denver University. I just have to say I could NOT be more proud of him. In 5 years he graduated with a double major in Finance and Real Estate- always kept a GPA of over 3.5, studied abroad (all of us as a family) for 6 months in SWEDEN all while being an amazing father(since beginning of Jr. year) and usually working at least 40 hours a week. Thats dedication.

Anyway so they were all here and I decided to make us Sunday morning brunch. I make Swedish pancakes for the first time in the US and the consensus was unanimous (sp?) they were amaaaaazing. THere are a ton of ways to make them and heres the recipe I used ( I tripled the recipe since I was feeding 8 people- 5 of them adult males.

Feeds 3-4
3 eggs
1.2 cups of flour
2.4 cups of milk
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

mix everything together- beat it so there are no lumps- than let sit in the fridge for 45 minutues. Use butter in frying pan every 3-4 pancakes- which you cook on medium heat. You want the pancakes to be super thin so you dont use very much of the mixture in the pan. We served them with two different types of jam and whipped cream- but my favorite way to eat them is with butter and sugar--YUMMMM. In Sweden these can be served for breakfast, lunch or a light supper.

This mamma IS going to tone up.

The first year after having Jasper I did absolutely NOTHING to lose the 35 lbs I gained while pregnant. In fact after getting the shot 6 weeks after birth I'm convinced I started to gain weight instead of lose it- but we will never know because I stayed VERRYY far away from scales. When we spent 6 months in Sweden from Jan 09- till July 09 I still wasnt working out- but living in downtown Karlstad, Sweden and our main mode of transportation being my own two legs I started to shed the weight and thats even with eating everything in sight, because lets face it, I was on a 6 month vacation in the land of cheese and amazing candy so ofcourse I did. I came back still about 20 lbs heavier than my pre preggo weight so I got a gym membership. I worked out 2-3 times a week for a few months and started getting compliments from those around me which inspired me even more! Buuut than I started nannying full time and going to the gym is now impossible during the week. So I did start some pilates and was seeing results and then got lazy.

Whats my new inspiration? Other than having 4 pools within walking distance? Possible vegas trip in July (more on that later) and a strapless beautiful gown for our october wedding. I am still 10ish lbs heavier- but I used to be super tiny and thats not the goal anymore. Plus if I lost ten more I'd lose by boobs- and those I never used to have and would rather keep. So its going to be pilates and some weight lifting for me. Sooo today since the weather is kinda crappy and def. not a pool day I'm going to make the one mile walk to target to buy some weights and then do some of that during nap time. That plus pushing 50 lbs plus of double stroller weight will be enough for me today!

Here we go...Again.

So I Love reading blogs. Baby blogs, traveling blogs, cooking blogs, blogs in Swedish (more on that later) and I have started by own blog 3 times and just dont seem to be able to keep up with it. This time I'm starting clean and I'm DETERMINED to keep it up. Mainly as a way to remember all the crazy things Jasper is doing these days.

Little about me.
I'm a 23 year old (soon to be 24) stay at home mamma to a crazy, active, adorable soon to be three year old son, Jasper. He will be the star of this blog. I also nanny for a soon to be one year old Riley here at our apartment in the beautiful state of Colorado. My fiance and baby daddy Drew graduates from Denver University in TWOOO DAAYS! We could not be more excited or ready for this change. We are both from a small town in Iowa and moved out here to go to school. We have No clue where we will be living in one year. If I had my way we would be back in Sweden (where I spent the first 12 years of my life and another 6 months last year when we studied abroad.) What else....I love to travel, to try new recipes, go SHOPPING (major, not minor obsession) and I'm currently planning our October wedding- so life is crazy!

Okay thats all for now- but hopefully I will keep this up on a regular basis.
